Guangxi University has a glorious history and fine tradition of studies on Marxism. The first president, Mr. Ma Junwu, in 1903, was the first to introduce five great works of Marx and Engels with a bibliography in Yi Shu Hui Pien, a monthly Chinese magazine of translated political works, The Communist Manifesto and Capital included. In the mid-to-late 1930s, many brilliant minds in the country taught at Guangxi University, such as Mr. Li Da, one of the founders of the Communist Party of China, and Mr. Chen Wangdao, the first translator of the full-text Chinese version of The Communist Manifesto. In 1950, Professor Yang Dongchun, a Marxist theorist, served as the president of Guangxi University.

Currently, the School of Marxism at GXU has been a national training base for teachers of ideological and political theory courses in colleges and universities, one of the 12 standing director units of the National Alliance for Information Technology in Teaching Ideological and Political Courses in Colleges and Universities, and the Research Center of China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future. It has been authorized to confer doctoral degree in the first level discipline of Marxist theory and master's degree in the first level discipline of philosophy. The discipline of Marxist theory at GXU is on the list of Guangxi first-class disciplines.

The school boasts a strong faculty team, consisting of 112 teachers, including 47 professors, and 87 doctoral degree holders, some of whom are experts and scholars of profound attainments and high esteem, including national high-level talents, cultural masters of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and members of "Four Batch" Talent Project, candidates of the New Century Talents Project, members of the talent pool for national defense education, reviewers of the National Social Science Fund of China, members of the National Steering Committee of Regular Institutions of Higher Education for Military Teaching, members of the Ministry of Education Steering Committee for Ideological and Political Theory Teaching in Colleges and Universities, Guangxi "Bagui Scholar", Guangxi cultural masters and members of “Four Batch” Talent Project, and leading figures and outstanding talents of ideological and political education in Guangxi.

The school has achieved major breakthrough in discipline development in the past three years. According to Shanghai Ranking, Marxist theory at GXU has ranked among the top 10% Chinese disciplines for a third year straight. It was in the top 5% (17th) in 2020, top 7% (25th) in 2021, and top 6% (20th) in 2022. Benefited from the discipline development, teachers and students in the school have produced fruitful outcome. A total of 40 projects of provincial-ministerial level have been secured, including 18 national projects, among which there are 3 major projects of the Social Science Fund of China and 1 national key research program from the Ministry of Education. They have published 118 papers in CSSCI journals and 12 theoretical articles in famous academic journals like People's Daily, Guangming Daily, Economic Daily, and Qiushi. In addition, the employment rate of its graduates is over 95%, 45% of students are taking postgraduate exams and 10% are pursuing doctoral studies.

Over the past three years, teachers and students of the school have won more than 50 awards in various competitions. Many faculty members were given honorary titles out of exemplary performance in their profession. In the first National Teaching Innovation Competition for Teachers in Colleges and Universities, one took the second prize, the Teaching Academic Innovation Award and the Teaching Activity Innovation Award, who is among the most awarded teachers in the competition. One was honored with the title of National Model Teacher and one won the first prize of Guangxi Young Teachers' Teaching Competition, the title of the Guangxi May Fourth Youth Medal and the title of Guangxi Teaching Expert. Additionally, there was one course in the school that was approved to be a national first-class course and two courses that were selected as Guangxi first-class courses. In terms of the evaluation of ideological and political education course, the rate of students giving a score above 85 has been up to 100%.
